Preview: Canon Powershot SX280 Compact Travel Zoom

Last week Canon announced the latest SX model, the Canon Powershot SX280 compact travel zoom. Now here’s a quick look at its spec’s:

    • 20x zoom, 25mm lens (25- 500mm equivalent)
    • HS System: 12.1 MP CMOS, DIGIC
    • Intelligent IS, Enhanced Dynamic IS
    •  Wi-Fi
    • Full HD (60fps)
    • 7.5 cm (3.0″) PureColor II G LCD
    • GPS with A-GPS
    • Hybrid Auto; Smart Auto
    • Manual, Av and Tv modes
    • High-speed shooting. Optional Waterproof Case

The SX280 will be a natural rival to Panasonic’s recently released compact travel zoom, the Panasonic TZ40. Historically the TZ series have ruled the roost but I wouldn’t mind betting a pint that the SX280 may trump the TZ40 in particular in the image department. And the reason? Canon have sensibly kept the pixel density on the small 1/2.3″ sensor to 12mp unlike Panasonic who for some bizarre reason (is Panasonic using 18mp Sony sensors?)  have increased the pixel density of the TZ40 to 18mp. In other features (zoom, screen, wi-fi, GPS etc) the Panasonic and Canon are evenly matched. It will be interesting to see if at last a TZ model can be knocked off it perch.
